My Little Scythe does a lot of things right. The artwork is vivid. The rules are simple and streamlined. The choices are many but not too much. All in all, MYS is a great foray into a modern hobby game for children. I don't think it's a substitute for Scythe or even a gateway to Scythe and as a group of adults without kids (for the time being), I felt the decision making to be too easy and too quick for my taste. What I'm actually excited about is what My Little Scythe could mean to the hobby. If this means we get more modernized games geared towards kids from other publishers (or even more from @jameystegmaier), I'm all aboard for the ride. It's too early to tell now but fingers crossed. I didn't design or construct the built-ins (shout out to Bantam Contracting) but I did paint them! If I thought I hated painting miniatures, that doesn't hold a candle to shelves and bathrooms. #builtins #baltimore #bantamcontracting #painting #bathroom #renovations #adulting
Economic games, whether through financial viability, trade, auction, or negotiation, are easily my favorite genre of board games. When I saw The Estates, I knew I had to have it. The game is simple to learn and play, quick from start to finish, and looks gorgeous. The Estates does a lot of things right but I was a little let down by the fact that the only way to play this game is by being mean. I have no issues with playing cutthroat games and nor do my friends but The Estates offered no other avenue of play. I also felt it *too* simple and I had myself wondering why I would break this out over similar games like Lords of Vegas, Modern Art, or Chinatown. I was so hyped for The Estates but ultimately disappointed. This is a game that people can and will enjoy but sadly I was not one of them. It may not look exciting but my hearts pounding (and not just from helping carry it inside); the new floor tile arrived! #renovations
One of my favorite games is Azul. The puzzly nature and quick game play has endeared itself to us and saw the game receive over 100 plays in 2018. But that doesn't mean it's perfect. The act of throwing the discarded tiles in the box lid to then eventually put back in the bag never sat right with me. It was ugly and not easy to then get the tiles from the lid back into the bag. Enter the collapsible paint cup. This cup is the perfect height to hold almost all tiles and the bag that comes with Azul fits directly over the mouth of the cup, ensuring easy transfer. It has quickened our games immensely and it's just so pleasing to drop the tiles in the cup. My major fear was wear and tear on the components as they would be clacking against one another but there's no difference from the day we bought the game. The collapsible nature of the cup also means that it fits in the box and can go wherever Azul goes. This isn't a necessity but it's definitely a quality of life improvement for a game we played a lot.
